Default Advice please. Make an old man happy

Hi there,
I have searched the forums and still can't find a solid answer to my question.
I have all my converted DVD's on an external drive which is shared in my household network.
Will the Apple tv play films over the my network in the same fashion as the othre PC's do or do you have to store them on the Apple TV hard drive to play them??
I want to go and spend my pension money on one of these units but need to know if it will do the job.

ps. Assuming it does as I wish, what quality and performance would I get.

Thanks for your help.
