Default Playing AVI files on apple tv

Hi all
I'm just considering buying an apple tv but i was wondering what i have to do to play avi files on it.
I would like to have my files saved locally on the apple tv box and be able to watch them from the avi format so i don't have to bother converting them or anything.
Can anyone help?

Default playing avi files

I posted the original question and as you can see got no response (little disspointing) but it made me do it myself i guess which is no bad thing.

I tried a patchstick but it didn't work completely so i bit the bullet and took the thing apart.
Once you've got the box open (nice and easy don't fret) you need to plug the HDD into a usb caddy. I had one that didn't have a power supply and the new iMAC i've got couldn't power it (although it did work when plugged into a powered usb hub)
Once you've got your drive mounted in mac follow the instructions on this web page.

http://www.appletvhacks.net/2007/03/...your-apple-tv/

NOTE: i have recently upgraded to leopard and the above guide didn't work, so i copied the sshd file and ssh.plist from the previous systems folder that leopard creates when it upgrades. (very lucky it does that) and it was all godod. If you have a new install of leopard then i'm not sure what to do you could email me and i'll send you the 2 files.

Anyway with that all done you can plug your hard drive back in and connect via ssh.
NOTE while the HDD is still mounted on your mac you may as well download the latest version of ATV Loader by Alan Quatermain from here http://alanquatermain.net/atvloader/ and copy the folder onto your apple TV. When i did this i had trouble getting into the folder through bash untill i renamed it ATVLoader.

So anyway plug the HDD into the apple TV iand back to into your TV. You should then be able to connect to the apple TV via SSH 1.(all in the first guide) NOTE make sure you do ssh -1 in bash to connect it seems SSH 2 doesn't work, at least i couldn't get it to.
Follow the instructions in the ATV Loader folder to get that working and reboot.
You should now see a new menu entry on the Apple TV, go into it and install NITO tv.
You can now copy avi files to the folder on the apple tv and they will appear in the files menu in NITO tv. (I use fugu to copy the files from my mac and it works fine.)

So i think thats everything you need to do. I am a Microsoft (boo hiss) engineer and bought my MAC and apple tv a few weeks ago as a complete mac virgin. I have read lots on the internet mainly awkward tv and alan quatermain's sites and feel quite confident in what i'm doing now so thanks to all those guys. The best thing about hacking to apple tv it you can return to factory state so if you do something really wrong you should be able to go back to the begining and start again. which happened to me when i tried to get my keyboard and mouse working. Only took me about an hour to get everything inastalled and working again.

Hope this helps someone out there and i apologise for the lenght and bad spelling

You don't need to convert the files if you install the codecs on your hacked ATV. Just install NitoTV

Unfortunately there is not too much traffic on this forum here. You might also check the macrumors.com forum.

I think you need a third party software to help you.
Here I find Wondershare Video Converter Platinum could convert AVI files to Apple TV support files.
